ShopSmart: 6 questions to ask when you're cruising for a discount
We're continuing to highlight tips from the editors of ShopSmart. Here are some great questions you should ask before handing over your cash, from the Fall 2006 issue.
- “Will this be going on sale soon?”
The seller might offer the discount now or tell you about an upcoming sale. - “Can you beat this price?”
Surf online to see what other retailers are charging for an item. Show your printout to the salesperson, who may match or beat the price. - ”Can I get a volume discount?”
This works if you’re buying multiple items. - “Can you throw in a freebie?” Ask the salesperson to throw in a free accessory, such as a belt clip for a new cell phone.
- “Will you take this coupon?”
Even if the coupon has expired or is from another retailer, it’s worth asking. - “Do I get a discount for paying cash?”
This one works well with contractors, doctors, and other service providers.
