ShopSmart: 6 questions to ask when you're cruising for a discount

wallet We're continuing to highlight tips from the editors of ShopSmart. Here are some great questions you should ask before handing over your cash, from the Fall 2006 issue.

  1. “Will this be going on sale soon?”
The seller might offer the discount now or tell you about an upcoming sale.
  2. “Can you beat this price?”
Surf online to see what other retailers are charging for an item. Show your printout to the salesperson, who may match or beat the price.
  3. ”Can I get a volume discount?”
This works if you’re buying multiple items.
  4. “Can you throw in a freebie?” Ask the salesperson to throw in a free accessory, such as a belt clip for a new cell phone.
  5. “Will you take this coupon?”
Even if the coupon has expired or is from another retailer, it’s worth asking.
  6. “Do I get a discount for paying cash?”
This one works well with contractors, doctors, and other service providers.
