Following manufacturer, CPSC recalls grill that melted in CU tests
Four days after Onward Manufacturing of Canada announced a recall of three models of gas grills after the firebox of two samples melted in tests conducted by Consumer Reports, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission followed suit today with its own recall. In the recall notice, the CPSC said the recall involved 4,800 Signet, Sovereign and Sovereign XL series gas grills.
Consumer Reports encountered the problem in a routine test to determine how well a grill handles flare ups from fatty foods. In the tests, a Broil King Signet 90's firebox melted, dripping molten metal onto the area beneath the grill. We subsequently tested two other samples of this grill: The firebox of one melted and that of the other grill had begun to crack and deform by the end of the test. Because we believe that the Broil King Signet 90 is dangerous and poses a serious safety risk, we judged it Not Acceptable.
Our earlier report on the recall details our testing, includes a video, and outlines the steps that Onward is taking to correct the problem.

I HAVE PURCHASED THE GREAT OUTDOORS PINNACLE GAS GRILL ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO, MODEL #TG560N., 60,000 BTU'S MAIN AND 24,000 ACCESSORY.
I CLEAN THE TOTAL INTERIOR TWICE A YEAR.
HAVE HAD MANY CASES WHERE THE GRILL CATCHES ON FIRE EVEN WHEN GRILLING VEGETABLES.
HAS THERE BEEN ANY RECALLS OR PROBLEMS WITH THIS GRILL?

I bought a Sovereign XLS right at the time of the recall. I was assured by the salesstaff there was no concern using it before getting the baffle kit, which OMC was quick to send me. I think the risk of problems using this bbq as directed is the same as any other brand bbq. It's a great value.

After a number of happy years with a Broil Mate bbq, I decided to replace it with an upmarket Broil King product. OMC manufactures those lines along with Sterling. The Broil Mate always heated up quickly, had no hot spots and was easy to modulate. I ordered a Signet 20 on May 31 and only found out of the recall that evening when I was looking for reviews. After calling the store I purchased the signet from the next morning I was happy to find that they were aware of the recall and that all of the products in question had the CSA approved retrofit. I appreciate CR work in identifying a potential problem and Broil King for addressing it so quickly. I again look forward to many happy years using one of their products.

Has the new baffle kit been tested?

I purchased a Broil King "Broil Mate Model 1955-64 or 1955-67 (unsure which one) about 2 days before the CR article in June 2008 made it to my door. I have not used it yet and I am considering returning it.
However, maybe this model will not have the same problem as the ones that are recalled? Can someone verify that the recall does not effect the other models? Any help would be appreciated; I'm still using my old grill, with the new one right next to it.

I have had a Boil King mid - sized grill for a number of years. I purchased it from Rochester Stove of Rochester NH. in August of 2001. The model number is 524-14 Serial number N-160058. Do I need to be concerned about this product as well? I have used it, but am still worried that a potential problem exists.
Please inform.
Thanks
D. Brandon
