Yankees Sod and Grass Seed go on sale

Is there a performance-enhanced A-Rod version that can resist weeds, pests, and drought?

Delea Sod Farms Yankee StadiumWith the new Yankee Stadium set to open next month, lots of attention has been focused on the big ballpark in the Bronx.

Across the Hudson River in New Jersey, one company is trying to capitalize on the buzz around the Bronx Bombers by selling the same sod and grass seed that will be used at the new stadium, according to this report in The New York Times.

DeLea Sod Farms (shown), a Bridgeton, New Jersey, company that has been providing the turf for the Yankees since the 1960s, is selling sod and seed made of the same Kentucky bluegrass blend used at Yankee Stadium. You'll be able to by a 4-foot-long x 16-inch-wide swath of Yankees Sod at New York City-area Home Depot stores for $7.50. At those prices, it would cost you about $1,400 for every 1,000 square feet of sod. (Seems like the Yankees payroll and stadium seats and concessions aren't the only extravagantly priced things related to the team: Sod typically costs 8 to 30 cents per square foot and about double that for pro-installed turf.) You'll also be able to pick up 3- and 8-ounce bags of Yankees Grass Seed at a variety of locations, and Home Depot will sell larger bags.
