By the Numbers: Generating renewable energy will also generate new jobs, says UCS
297,000
Number of new green-collar jobs that would be created in the United States by 2025 if a new national standard requiring all electric utilities to increase the amount of renewable electricity they provide to 25 percent were to go into effect, according to analysis by the Union of Concerned Scientists.
In its recently released 25 Percent By 2025 initiative, the UCS, a nonprofit alliance of more than 250,000 citizens and scientists, suggests that a national renewable-electricity standard would also produce:
• $263.4 billion in new capital investment; $13.5 billion in income to farmers, ranchers, and rural landowners; and $11.5 billion in new local tax revenues.
• $64.3 billion in consumer savings on electricity and natural-gas bills.
• 2 percent reduction in pollution from power plants, equal to removing 45.3 million cars from U.S. roads.
