Why no sewing machine ratings? Given the recession, it would be a big help!

Also looking for current sewing machine ratings and repair report. We always check Consumer reports when making a major purchase and we're disappointed there are not any ratings for sewing machines, specifically electronic ones.

Sure would be nice if there were sewing machine ratings. My wife is looking to buy and is very disappointed the CR is no help. I had a similar experience a few months ago with water softeners.

We're looking about information on sergers and was dissappointed not to find anything on sergers or sewing machines.

I'm quite disappointed that there are no rating for sewing machines. We're looking to purchase one, and the reviews that we find on the Internet are confusing...plenty of reports about how great a particular brand and model is, right above reports about how much of a piece of refuse the same make/model is! CR has always been trustworthy, but the dead links in this article make me wonder why I paid to sign up to this site!

What gives?

Having difficulty threading current mechanical machine and would like to choose some electronic options. Disappointed there are no ratings. Need to purchase new sewing machine to save clothing costs.

Ditto the above. I was counting on information from Consumer Reports before purchasing my new machine. It's been 30 years since I bought a machine and I want the new one to last that long.

I,too, was very disappointed to find no current information on sewing machines. They can be quite a large purchase.

Need to buy a sewing machine and was looking for your ratings. We always consult you first before making major purchases. Are electronic sewing machine ratings coming soon?

I REALLY needed the ratings info for sewing machines. I was certain I would get help from the CR web site- I'm terribly disappointed.

Nine people in the last 10 days are looking for ratings on sewing machines?? Apparantly there are a lot more people this would benefit. Any way to find out if there's going to be a report anytime in the near future?

With 9 people expressing their disappointment that there aren't any sewing machine ratings, there must be many more looking. Any was to find out if there are plans to test them in the future?

I need to buy a serger and a sewing machine. Please do a rating report to guide me in this expensive purchase.

How disappointing to not find sewing machine ratings! Sure, the buying info was helpful but no more so than I can find on many other sites. I'm feeling that we are not getting what we paid for. No sewers on staff?? Possibly hire some to do some testing!? Or is this a site that focuses on the boy's toys?

An unhappy woman.

I've been looking for my first serger and wanted CR advice. Opps, none!! From the look of other comments, I can only hope something is coming soon.

I'm also very disappointed with no sewing machine ratings. When I checked the CR generic blog it really looked like you had ratings. That's why I subscribed. I feel like I've been ripped off!

Very disappointed in not finding rating info on sewing machines. I often come up short trying to find info in general with you folks and may not renew.

To reiterate all the comments above, I too, would like help unraveling all the conflicting advice and information on the internet, before I invest $500 to $1000.

Looking for ratings of basic (simple - for straight sewing on variety of fabrics including denim) sewing machines - anything in the works?

I am looking to replace my sewing machine and could not find any help here as this is a $ 300 outlay it would have helped.

Add me to the list of disappointed information seekers. I, also, thought that your information page about sewing machines implied or stated that I could get reviews if I joined. So I joined. Good thing I chose the month-to-month option. I've always thought this organization to be very trustworthy, but I'm not feeling so confident right now. Isn't that really all you've got going for you? Trust?

Like the lady above, my wife has had her sewing machine for about 35 years and is finally about to get a new one. We always come to CR first for such purchases and it's really annoying that you don't have comparisons on these. There's not too many other places to go to so I wish you'd please tell me when you're planning to do a report.

I'm looking for sewing machine ratings, also. I hope this is being considered!

I bought a Bernina sewing machine 5 years ago. I am happy with it. I paid $1,500 for it. Now I am looking for a serger. I was hoping to find some info here rating the different brands. Hope you consider adding sewing machines and sergers to your listings. They are expensive and it would be helpful to know if you are getting value for the money.

My wife is looking for a serger. I routinely check CR before buying anything from vacumm cleaners to cars. Nothing listed here about sewing machines or sergers. Will you be adding this category any time soon?

I'm in full agreement with the other comments here: please do a test/rating of sewing machines. Maybe if enough of us ask, they'll decide it's worth it.

I would like to add to the many, many comments already posted. I am looking to buy an electronic sewing machine. As you mentioned in your buying advice, these are quite pricey and I would really appreciate some guidance from you guys. You're always my first choice when making purchases, many of them much less expensive than this item.

Why no sewing machine ratings? I needed to purchase a machine a year ago and was really disappointed in Consumer Reports not having one. Now I'm looking for a Serger and it appears that I will be disappointed again. Given the number of people that have posted on this web site, CR is sadly lacking in this area.

Put me on the list of people looking for ratings on sergers. I would love to have CR advice for this purchase.

I, too, wanted to find ratings for sewing machines. Those of us that sew alot and are using high end machines need this information to make the best selection. When you are thinking of spending $2000 to $3000 you want some unbias information. I am also interested in long arm quilting machines. Please, Consumer's Report, help us out.

Add my name to the list. I too was looking for machine ratings and hopefully a "Best Buy." I guess I'm on my own with this one. Very disappointed.

Please consider doing ratings for sewing machines and sergers. I have been sewing for some time and would like to get a better machine and would really value the input of CR in making my decision on this rather major purchase.

Also looking for sewing machine reviews. Disappointed.

i'm shopping for myself my christmas present now an expensive sewing/embroidery machine. help!

CR you have let me down. I am ready to invest in a quilting sewing machine and the first place I went to was CR. What did I find? No ratings. Shame on you!

One more DISAPPOINTED subscriber looking to make what everyone on here considers a major purchase- it's not the price, CR subscribers can usually afford to buy what they want. It's the ratings and dependability that we always check before we buy. I guess we just have to realize that we can't rate everything!

Why no ratings for sewing machines?

Disappointed CR is not rating electronic sewing machines...

Dismayed that you have no sewing machine ratings. Our 1960s Singer died and we really needed advice on a replacement, especially with all the mixed-bag stuff coming from China!

CR, I'm joining in with the others. Lets get some ratings.

Add my name to the list. I too was looking for machine ratings and hopefully a "Best Buy." I guess I'm on my own with this one. Very disappointed.

My poor husband had to look all over to find some ideas of what serger to get me. I wish you had ratings here. Now I'm looking at getting a new sewing machine, and was hoping you'd have some information here to help. We've been subscribers for years and years. Please rate some sewing machines for us.

Hey, Guys! Are your subscribers the only ones reading these posts? We are average people who need to buy a sewing machine. Get busy and earn this monthly fee I'm paying!

I subscribed to CR specifically to see ratings on serger sewing machines. That was a year ago and still no ratings. As others above have stated, sewing machines are expensive and I would like an unbiased rating of what's out there. I need a machine now and cannot wait any longer. Sorry, CR. I will not be renewing my subscription.

I NEED TO BUY A SERGER AND I NEED SOME ADVICE.THAT IS WHY I JOINNED IN. WHERE IS IT? I NEVER BUY ANYTHING WITHOUT CHECKING WITH YOU GUYS FIRST. PLEASE HELP ME!!

I'm a quilter and purchased a "gently loved" Pfaff a year ago and have had it repaired 5 times. I need to return/trade up and thought I'd find sewing machine ratings on this sight - what a disappointment! I still use my 37-year-old Sears Kenmore (nothing plastic on this machine and I've had it repaired twice in 37 years) but I'm looking for a machine that specializes in quilting.

HELP!

Indeed. I looked here to find ratings for machines. The last one I bought was 25 years ago. I, too, am disappointed.

I, too, would love to have ratings on sewing machines. Including sergers in the review would be even better! There are so many choices and not enough time to thoroughly review all of them...I've been thinking about getting a new machine for several years but haven't made the leap because I'm not sure what features are most important to have and which machines are most reliable in the long-term. We depend on Consumer Reports to give us the skinny on what's what out there. Please help us with this buying decision.

I purchased the subscription to CR solely to research sewing machines. $19.00 and waisted my money which I want back. This is a good test of CR's current ethics.

We're looking for a sewing machine after 15 years and don't know where to begin without CR ratings guide...HELP!

Wow -- lots and lots of us looking for ratings! I, like so many others, am needing to buy a new sewing machine and turned to CR for help, only to be disappointed. I had my last machine for 23 years, and want to get another one that is going to last with minimal repairs. So I'll echo what everyone else is saying -- Please do some ratings soon!!

I use Consumers Reports for most purchases that I make but can't for sewing machines or sergers because there aren't any useful reviews or ratings. I've been sewing for 40 years and teaching about sewing for at least 15 years. I'm frustrated by reviews of low end sewing machines. You don't buy a sewing machine based on the number of features or stitches any more than you buy a car based on the number of cup holders. A $50 Brother might, and I say might be able to mend a tear, but it will never offer the control and with it the lack of frustration that a higher end machine can. You're better off saving your money and buying a quality used machine than buying a cheap new one that can't hold an even tension. The number of features doesn't interest me nearly as much as stitch balance, buttonhole quality, attachments, and tension control. Please consider reviewing higher end sewing machines well over $1000 by companies like Pfaff, Bernina, Elna, Viking, and Babylock. Ratings with reviews would be invaluable if they were done by experienced individuals with a focus towards specific needs such as tailoring, general garment construction, French hand sewing, upholstery, quilting, etc. Simple reviews comparing the number of features would be useless. Additional information about customer service and reliability would be helpful. Thank you.

As with other comments I went to CR to find info on sewing machines and found none. I have a sewing machine Kenmore, for 30 years I have used it without a single problem but I would like to update to new electronic model. They are expensive I would like advise on them.

Very disappoited, my reason for subscribing to Consumer Reports was to get a rating on a sewing Machine before purchasing. I am considering canceling my subscription!

Whoa, I guess you need to start rating sewing machines. With the cost of gas, food, and everything else people are starting to go back to basics and a good sewing machine is essential.

I am also looking for sewing machine ratings. Looks like I'm in good company. Please let me know if you can provide this info. soon or if I will have to find out the hard way!

Frankly, I don't know why I'm taking time to post this comment, as I subscribe to CR in order to save time and get the best value for my hard earned money. I need a sewing machine TODAY! Sewing machine ratings in CR tomorrow WILL NOT HELP ME! SHAME ON YOU CR FOR LETTING US DOWN!!!! P.S. I guess I took the time to post this comment in hopes that venting my frustration would make me feel better........IT DOES NOT!!!!!

I thought I looked earlier and you had ratings on sewing machines - priced below $600, but in looking again I see nothing. Why would you not rate sewing machines? I want to get one for my daughter who is a beginning sewer! Do you plan to rate them? This is the third time I have not been able to find information on something I wanted to purchase!

I add my voice to the others here looking for ratings on sewing machines and sergers.

Just another subscriber who wanted to add a request for sewing machine ratings.

I agree with Rebecca, June 19, 2008, and thank her for the information that she provided as an educator. Please do some in depth research on sewing machines and report to us in the same expert professional way that you always have! Thank you!

Some years ago I remember seeing in Vogue Pattern magazine ratings for Sewing machines and Sergers. I have not recently purchased this magazine and don't know if they have published information that would include the newer models. I looked at the Web site but I don't see it in the synopsis of each back issue.

I subscribed today to see sewing machine ratings.
What a disappointment!

How long will it be to see Bernina vs Viking sewing machine ratings?

I echo all of the comments above. CR needs to add sewing machines and sergers to their product reports.

I echo all the comments above as well. I'm looking for a good basic machine right now and I've been reading on all the top brand websites and I keep getting conflicting reviews. All the top brands have those that love the machine and those that hate them. I want an honest non-biased review, not based on user error or years of experience. I thought this would be a good place to find that, but I guess not. My search continues....

I agree with everyone above. Thought I would try to help others looking for ratings. It is certainly no Consumer Report, but I at least found the following site:

http://www.viewpoints.com/Sewing-Machines?sort=stars-1

Not much out there that I could find.

Happy hunting...

CR needs to review some sewing machines for us. We need help making a good choice, and I am astounded that you have no reviews.Come on...help us out.

What a disappointment! I'm looking to buy a new sewing machine. I have 40 years of sewing. I wanted to see performance, price and warranty compared between machines. CR failed! Thank goodness I just subscribe for a month.

I couldn't believe you didn't have sewing machine ratings! Please consider rating them, only thing is the information will be too late for me.

I can't add any more about the disappointment of not finding reviews to help me with my sewing machine purchase = just wanted to let you know there is one more disappointed subscriber. Thanks to Jai for offering at least some kind of resource!

Please add me to the list of disappointed first time users. I signed up to get a rating on a sewing machine only to learn that you haven't rated sewing machines. I just wasted $20! Thanks for nothing.

It's time to review sergers, CR! Please!

I can't believe I'm paying for a Consumer Reports subscription. The last two things I've needed help on didn't have anything but 'buying advice'. DUH !!!! I need RATINGS !!! I thought that's what I was paying for. Add another disappointed MEMBER.

add me to your list ... I looked at baby lock sewing machines today to replace my 30 year old pfaff....I was shocked by the prices... I was hoping to get some help from CR for different manufacturers, models and best buys...a sewing machine is a necessity.

Add my voice to the requests for reviews of sewing machines and sergers! They are major purchases (more than many gas grills!)and with gas at >$4/gal, a lot of us are looking to save money on clothing budgets. PLEASE HELP1

I had no idea there were so many people in the same boat as I - looking for RATINGS on sewing machines, sergers, embroidery machines. These are pretty big purchases that last for years. Would really appreciate some support in this area.

I am so disappointed that there are no rating for sewing machines. I depend heavily on CR for helping me to make decisions on purchases. Where are you on this matter?????

Now I have to spend a lot of time and effort (AND GAS MONEY)researching. Do I need to cancel my subscription to CR?

NOT HAPPY

What happened to the ratings? I was able to use CR to help me purchase a sewing machine for my daughter last year, but now when I need one myself, the ratings are all gone. Why remove the old ones when new ones aren't available?

What's the use of the subscription if the information isn't available?

come on CR:

it was some months a go that I went shopping for an electronic sewing machine and a serger and your recommended models that interested me were discontinued.

We need to shop for these items and I am hoping that a really good ratings is forthcoming soon.

Thanks

It appears that many many readers/subscribers have asked for quit a while to get ratings on sewing machines. I does not appear that you are being responsive to the subscribers request. Keep in mind that we pay money to get advise on purchase. Why are you ignoring this so many customers? Can you advise us when you think you will get around to sewing machines? Thank you for other reviews that I have relied on and made purchases based on.

I guess it's been said a few times. No information on specific brands or models. I figured I would find it here but guess not.

Please rate sewing machines!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Add one more disappointed reader to the long, long, ongoing list of folks who want CR to come through with ratings of sewing machines. What gives, CR? The recommendations article mentions CR tests, so y'all clearly did some - why not share the results?

I just want add my vote for rating sewing machines as well. Like many other members, I value the ratings that CRs produces. This is why I pay for my memebership. It is disappointing that there are no ratings for sewing machines.

I have been looking for a serger and hoped to find some advice on how to shop for one on your site. When will you research them? When will you rate these machines?

Hey tds i give rate to sewing machines. I am looking for a new technology always thats y i always send comments and read for my information. i was impressed with the technology.

Ditto all the above. I am sewing on a 75-year-old machine and have finally decided to buy a new one. I need guidance!

my daughter & I are learning to sew during this recession. Please help us w/ reasonable advice. We also need to know if younger girls & boys can use machines or if it is wise to purchase one of the machines for 9-12 year olds. Hurry, and thanks!

I'm getting ready to shop for a new sewing machine after many years without one. I came right to CR for good non bias information before making an investment. What a disappointment....no ratings for sewing machines. Sewing may be considered a "forgotten art" by some, but there are many of us out there who still derive great pleasure from our own creations.

I see I'm not the only disappointed subscriber. I wouldn't have joined if I had known no ratings existed. Where are your responses to these comments? I was just getting ready to renew my magazine subscription but will rethink my decision.

Please consider testing serger machines. From the above posts, rating sewing machines and subsequently sergers would fill an immediate need. Even though there is nothing new in technology of basic sewing machines, the many new names of manufacturers would pose a puzzling picture to someone who may want to invest in a machine.

I am AMAZED at the number of requests for ratings on sewing machines and sergers!!!!! Frankly, shocked that NO ONE from the staff has responded with any input at all.
I needed a new sewing machine after 22 years of CONSTANT sewing (formal wear, quilting, clothing, etc)---my first Kenmore from 1974 served me well!!!!! TWELVE years ago when two of my daughters were getting married just 33 days apart---my husband tried to find ratings ---as he was surprising me for Christmas with both a sewing machine and a serger---- At that time the ONLY ratings available were from 1985----- WHY? WHY? hasn't anything been done on this since then???!!! So much technology---the switch from metal parts to mostly plastic by low-end models, etc, etc------
IS anyone going to respond?? PLEASE DO!!!

I can't believe that you don't have ratings for sewing machines!!! Is there a way to check if CR has ratings on a product before signing up? That would avoid all the disappointment.

ditto, ditto, ditto. We really do need sewing machine reviews. You are missing a bunch of subscribers here. Take a look at the sewing machine blog sites - tons of sewers check for reviews.

I need to find a sewing machine. We count on Consumer Reports for all of our big purchases. Since there are no reviews I'm not sure where to go from here.

I'm trying to decide on a Serger Sewing machine. I am extremely disappointed that CR doesn't seem to see a real need for some of us who sew and have developed businesses for home goods. We need assistance on purchasing a good quality Serger machine. I'm sure, like sewing machines, that all are certainly created equal. I'm also certain that just because a commodity is pricey, that the selection is necessary the best on the market. Come on, folks! Give us a little direction here. I want some helpful advice on the quality and sew-ability of the sergers that are on the market!

I am so disappointed not to get ratings on sewing machines, sergers and embroidery machines. Several members of my family are interested in purchasing these for home and/or commercial use.

What's the deal - A sewing machine is a big ticket item. Where is your report? Are you unaware of the statistics? A survey conducted in 2006 (http://quiltersvillage.com/qinamer06.pdf) presented by Quilters Newsletter Magazine reported:

Size of U.S. Quilting Market
•17% (19.135 million) of U.S. households reporting quilting
participation.
• Total quilters in the U.S. now exceed 27 million, which
represents almost a 100% increase from the 14 million quilters
reported in 1997.
• With each quilting household spending an average of $172.29,
the estimated total dollar value of the quilting industry stands
at $3.3 billion.
This does not include other countries or those who do garment or home decorator sewing etc.
The average quilter spends $2145 on her machine excluding accessories for the machine.
Get with it Consumer Reports!!!!

I am realy disappointed that you do not have ratings for sewing machines. I am in the market for one and really wanted to check CR prior to my purchase. Will there be one soon?

Let's start our own reviews. Sears Kenmore model 16221 worked well for 2 hours and than the bobbin race started to jam. Followed the poorly written manual with no success. Returned it to Sears, they wanted to send it out for repair, and I wanted a new one. Sears wanted to charge me a stocking fee. I protested, got a new one, same model and it lasted 1 hour before it failed. Back to sears tomorrow. Lets give CR a break. Sewing machines are not the only things we reserach. They will get to it.

I, too, can only echo the comments on the lack of ratings sewing machines. I need a machine, and need the information that Consumer Reports imparts on other items to guide us. I don't know where to go now!

What is the purpose of posting all these comments about not having any sewing machine reviews with out even responding about when you might? I bet you won't post this one .... cars, grills, golf clubs, etc but no sewing machines? sexist maybe?

I too was looking for sewing maching ratings....what gives? Why no ratings?

I can't believe there are no ratings for sewing machines! I read all of the blogs and they are a reflection of exactly how I feel!
I am a quilter and want to upgrade to a better machine. There are MANY out there to test. With all of the computerized machines, I want CR to check them out for quality before I invest so much money! Consumer Reports.....Please, please, please....respond to the blogs.

hi me too.
but i like peter's idea (july 4). if i knew something about this stuff i would share it with y'all.

i'm letting go of the cabinet sewing machine that was passed down to me. i'd like to buy a simple machine that i can move around the house as needed. i need to use this for repairs and alterations, including regularly taking in jeans at the waist. any ideas anyone? singinheart@sbcglobal.net

thanks

I am looking for a serger, PLEASE put a sewing machine/serger rating in Consumer Report!

I have a Bernina 930 (about 30 yrs old) which is a dream to sew on and is very capable of any type of heavy duty sewing as well as fine lace, etc. and does quilting in a breeze. I understand it is the worlds most wanted. I also have Pfaff creative 1472 which is about 15 years old and is very easy to use but doesn't tackle the heavy stuff. Then my prize embroidery machine is a Bernina 165, which is an older model which does a fantastic job. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles like the newer ones, but is enough to do any task and does it exceptionally well. My only dissapointment with this model is: I wish it would go to 9mm and is only 5mm; it doesn't have an indicator light that signals when the bobbin is in need of thread and it is not compatable with my iMac to download Windows programs from the Bernina website so I can use the free embroidery programs that Bernina offers. Otherwise I could not live without my sewing machines. Note: I have purchased them all used from their respective dealers and service is a very important consideration when investing in a quality machine.

I bet if all people who posted here used this feature and wrote an e-mail with a request we would have had the ratings on sewing machines by now.

I just send them a request, will post a reply as soon as I receive it.

I am so sad! I don't have the first clue what to look for in a sewing machine. I trust you guys to give me good advise on price and quality! Why no ratings? People do still sew and sewing machines are a pricey investment.

Looks like an automated response to me, with minor editing. Send your requests in, let them see there is a demand for this ratings.

I recently took a trip to the local library to find a hard copy review on sewing machines. The librarian mockingly cajoled me by stating sewing machines are not relevant anymore. I think she's completely wrong. With the upswing of DIYers in these economic times, I think sewing machines are perfectly topical. Please consider reviewing them.

Wow, I'm really disappointed in CR. I just logged on to get the sewing machine ratings and -- nothing! My last sewing machine purchase, in 1973, was a dud. I want to avoid that experience, but how can I without some ratings?? With all the DIY young folks as well as people trying to save their budgets right now, will CR consider rating sewing machines?

Wow, I'm really disappointed in CR. I just logged on to get the sewing machine ratings and -- nothing! My last sewing machine purchase, in 1973, was a dud. I want to avoid that experience, but how can I without some ratings?? With all the DIY young folks as well as people trying to save their budgets right now, will CR consider rating sewing machines?

I renewed my subscription to get info on sewing machines and guess what? Nada!!! Very disappointing! Please consider a review of this ASAP. I would probably have renewed anyway but the site said get more info if you subscribe so that's what I did. A little misleading.

I'm buying a new computerized embroidery/sewing machine THIS week. I joined CS specifically to read reviews. Wrong! I'm so disappointed. I'm immediately cancelling.

Add me to the list of disappointed. I too was hoping for info on sewing/embroidery machines.

I am VERY disappointed that you have no information on serger purchases. This is a major outlay we are in the market for a high end serger, and expect to spend between 500 and 1500 dollars. I was confident that you would be of assistance, but I was clearly wrong. I hope that you will take a look at the LARGE number of postings and listen to YOUR customers and review these products.

I have bought 3 sewing machines over the last 15 years trying to get the right one. Now I'm hunting for a serger and can't afford to do the same thing this time. I wish you had explanations of different features, comments on what's important, things to look for, and service experience, if not ratings, which I understand would be very difficult, given all the various things people are looking for in a sewing machine. But, basically, you have nothing and a lot of people seem to be looking and wishing you had something!

What a rip off! I was misled into thinking that I would get ratings of sewing machines if I paid money, and all I get are pages of comments from other disapointed sewers also looking for reviews. This is fraud!

Based on the variety of comments regarding lack of vital information on the newer sewing machines I am choosing to keep my old reliable Pfaff 1229 (circa 1982) and Singer 221 (circa 1954) !!!!!

It just surprizes the hell out of me. Can't you people read? Or do you just enjoy whining? Instead of spending 15 minutes on typing your "I'm dissapointed" or "Cancelling my subscription" message, spend two and SEND IN A REQUEST FOR THE RATING ON SEWING MACHINES OR SERGERS using the link provided on the CUSTOMER SERVICE PAGE of this web-site.

Once again, whining in this thread doesn't help anybody in any manner, TAKE ACTION if you really want the ratings and not just to slobber.

I have been sewing on Viking sewing machines for several years. I have computerized, serger and an embroidery machine. I will never use another brand. These are fabulous!

Like everyone else, I am shocked and dismayed to find no sewing machine ratings. I've been a loyal Consumer Reports reader for 18 years and it's always the first place I look for a significant investment like this! Please, please do a report ASAP.

We recently subscribed to CR. We decided to try it out for a month first. Disappointed once again. Three tries and no reports available. I am glad I haven't purchased the full year or the magazine.

Yes, PLEASE review sewing machines and embroidery machines. There are many things to consider like extra software to purchase, how easy it is to use, whether it can connect to the internet or just needs the cards, etc... And the prices are in the thousands of dollars! Nobody wants to send that much money and be disappointed. This was the main reason I subscribed. I will need to think strongly about continuing my subscription. Thank you.

I JUST joined Consumer Reports and I feel the lack of sewing machine reviews and price estimates is like unto a ripoff. I'm in the market for a sewing machine and Consumer Reports let me down right from the get-go!

I, too, just subscribed to CR online mostly because I'm about to purchase a new sewing machine. I bought my last one based on the information from CR and have been very happy with it. My town has 4 quilt shops which gives you an idea of the resurging popularity in a very old American art form...and we need good machines!!

Why are there no ratings for sewing machines in Consumer Reports?
I was about to replace my old machine and was disappointed that they are not rated in CR.

does anyone own a long arm home quilting machine that is under 2,000.00? Where can I buy one and what is the best model?

Quilting is becoming quite a cottage industry, so I'm looking for info on quilting machines/longarm quilting machines and the table set ups that go with them. Would love to see this, there is a lot of information out there and it's getting confusing.

I have always found Consumer Reports to be very valuable in making smart decisions when purchasing large expensive items. I once again need guidance. Please review embroidery machines and long arm quilting machines with tables. Both are quite an investment and I would feel more confident with my purchase.

I want to trade in my (hated) Pfaff for a new (or possibly a used machine I found last night). I'm struggling between a new Viking Husqvarna (which was my prior machine and I LOVED it) mid-line sewing non-embroidry machine, a Janome mid-line non-embroidery, a Janome floor model higher-end embroidery, or the used (1 1/2 years old, excellent condition) Janome embroidery machine. With my trade-in, these machines will all be roughly the same price, give or take $100-$200.

I'm interested in embroidery, but have NEVER used it. I never buy anything major without consulting Consumer Reports; I'm disappointed to find only "Buying Advice." This is info I need ASAP (due to the used model and thefloor model currently available); is there anywhere I can find more information, PLEASE?

SUGGESTION TO ALL COMMENTERS ABOVE:

Maybe because CR has pretty much let us down in this department, we need to just share our own experiences with whatever brands and types of machines we've used or know about. Anybody up for it?

Please rate sewing machines (I'm interested in high-quality machines such as Bernina, etc.) and sergers. This seems an obvious ommission on CR part as you seem to have rated everything else I've ever wanted to purchase. Keep up the good work but get on this assignment!!!

I don't know how reliable this is, but at least it's a guideline.

I just have to chime in here too. I've subscribed to the magazine most of my adult life and to the web site for many years too. Where are the ratings/buying advice for women who still like/need to quilt and to sew? We invest a lot of money into a machine and it would be great to have some unbiased help with our choices. Ratings for sewing machines would probably be a lot more helpful to a great many of us than all of the investment advice! And, where is CR's response to all of these comments?

I agree completely with the person who commented on the Bernina 930. I am a sewing teacher and have had the luxury of using many different machines. I have also purchased embroidery machines to the tune of 4,000.OO However it is my Bernina 930 that I can always trust and love to use the most. The owner of the Bernina shop who was an older gentelman who told me I would never regret the purchase had to convince me of it since I purchased it used. I had always thought of my first good machine should of been a new one. It did not take me long to realize that he gave me great advice. He has since passed away and his shop is still being run by his family. When I recently went to the store inquiring about puchasing another machine I was not surprised to learn that their is a waiting list for this used machine. As a FACS (sewing teacher) I am switching schools this year. The school I am going to has Bernina machines. I have not had a chance to uncover them but I am anxious and hopeful that at least of of them will be a Bernina 930. Search one out you will never regret the purchase of this machine, as I was once told. As a matter of fact it has gone up in price since I purchased it, what more could you want in life.

I would request that everyone who is dissappointed in the lack of sewing machine reviews call CR @ 914.378.2300, 9:15 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time to request that they do so. I plan on purchasing a machine this week so any future reviews that they do will not help me now.

I would also like to request that the person named "maxim" who wrote the comment on 7/12/08 would call CR and not take out her rude frustrations on this group. No class!

Please listen to your customers...and rate sewing machines. Not just Singer, Kenmore, Brother, but the wide range of machines on the market, such as Elna, Jenome, Viking and Berrina. I can't believe you have ignored all these comments from your readers.

Wow, I can't believe CR doesn't have sewing machine ratings. I know that sewing is a bit of a lost art but even those of us who don't do creative sewing have needs such as hemming pants, etc. I bought a cute little Janome a couple years ago at a friend's recommendation, but I don't really like it. I was looking for a basic, solid, sturdy machine to replace it and thought for sure I'd find recommendations here. Oh well. :-(

As a subscriber, I look to Consumer reports before making purchases. Like printers, I've found that my last few sewing machines did not, in fact, last me 10 years. In fact, it lasted about 3 months before each of them broke in succession, and I hardly sew.

Please start covering sewing machines. With the green movement going strong, especially reusing/recycling and now the green fashion industry focusing on making fashion from reclaimed items - this is a disservice!

I have always appreciated CR for the research on different products. I am looking to start my own Embroidery Service. However, I came to your site to look at information on the Commercial Embroidery machines. I wanted to have some background on the different brands, so I could make an educated decision. It disappointed me at how long people and how many have been requesting this information. Yet, the information is still lacking. From what I can tell my investment will be about as pricey as an automobile. I seems people want to know more about a car that can go 50 to 70 miles over the speed limit, EVEN THOUGHT IT IS ILLEGAL. Than making a responsible decision. Anyway, put more of your effort researching what consumers want.

Add one more who subscribed specifically to find detailed information on sewing machines, particularly the ones that are a large investment (e.g., quilting machines). I am very disappointed.

Just subscribed to on-line c.r. because I wanted to see ratings on sewing machines. There aren't any!!!!! With so many and varied types of sewing machines one would think that c.r. would have the latest info....very disappointed...it's like buying a pig in a poke(what ever that means!!)

Ditto:: Can't believe CR doesn't have sewing machine reviews. Always check CR before buying almost anything.

Very disappointed that CR has not rated sewing/sergers.

I have done very little sewing in the last 30 yrs. Now I have retired, I would like to get back to sewing and do things that I have dreamed of doing. I am so behind in knowing what is available and how it works. I am very disapointed that Consumer Report does not have this information since I keep my subscription current for such information.

I too have purchased expensive sewing machines only to be disappointed. I though I would wise up and check with CR before purchasing a serger. Unfortunately, no help here.

For what it is worth to the folks out there, I have purchased a Brother Pacesetter for regular sewing (love it!), Brother Innovis 4000 for embroidery (good machine, pricey, I think I could have done better). Several (3) Industrial blind hemmers (Rex, Us Blind and ?), had problems with loopers breaking (speed control?)...resorted to an inexpensive portable TacSew blind hemmer I purchased on ebay ($249.00 BUY NOW)....LOVE IT!...does everything the industrials but no mechanical problems! Now trying to decide on the serger....is the small home use just as good as an industrial?...any one out there that can advise...need it for slip covers...thanks for any info

I just want to add mys
