Medical debt on the rise as patients pay with plastic
More and more consumers are paying for their health care with credit cards, and consumer-credit businesses are seeing big profits. About $45 billion worth of consumers' out-of-pocket medical costs is charged on credit cards now, but that number could more than triple, to $150 billion, by 2015.
Of course, the downside to this risky business is the financial strain it puts on American families, as you'll see in the case of Nicole, whose family can’t afford health coverage. Nicole was interviewed by our Cover America Tour crew, and claims, "My Visa is my insurance card."
