Preview: TomTom XL 335S GPS

TomTom-XL-335SAs the holidays approach, TomTom has slotted a new model into its crowded product line, the XL 335S. As the “XL” denotes, this unit has a 4.3-inch widescreen. The “S” indicates that it has text-to-speech for spoken street names. Despite the numerical designation, the XL 335S technically slots above the XL 340S, with similar features and the latest interface.

Key features include IQ routing that uses historic traffic data to inform route planning and advanced lane guidance to help motorists navigate major road junctions. The XL 335S includes maps for the United States and Canada, along with seven million points of interest. (The XL 340S also has maps for Mexico.)

Fitted with the core features that matter most for routine navigation, the XL 335S retails for $240. The XL 340S currently presents a better value for most consumers, as it offers nearly the same features and specs and is just $180 with a current discount. TomTom advises its price will increase to $250, allowing the newer XL 335S to slot beneath it. (Learn about the recently announced XL 340S Live.)
