Vectrix electric motorcycle creates buzz, not emissions, at CES
Among rows gadgets, an electric motorcycle turned heads at CES, backed by the claim that it produces zero emissions (although overall environmental impact depends on the electricity source), can travel 40-60 miles on a charge at speeds up to 60 mph, and can be charged to 80 percent of battery capacity in two hours using a standard 110-volt outlet. The Vectrix also features an onboard charger and cord, and it uses regenerative braking to extend range by up to 12 percent. Vectrix U.S.A. claims an operating cost for its self-named bike of just two cents per mile.
The manufacturer says the two-wheeled green machine is easy to ride, with a low center of gravity and planetary gear system that doesn't require shifting going forward. There is a reverse gear to make parking easier.
With nickel-metal-hydride batteries, Vectrix says to expect a 10-year battery life, based on driving 5,000 miles per year. Capable of carrying two riders, the Vectrix is road legal in all 50 states. On sale since late 2007, dealers are now operating in seven states with plans for nationwide availability. Some of the first units went to the New York City Police department, who put several into a testing program.
The price? $11,000, but Vectrix says some tax incentives may be available.

I love to ride a bike if not for safety concern. But, if I were to buy bike, would I buy an electric one? No. Given me a diesel bike instead.
Posted by: Alan | Jun 4, 2008 9:22:48 AM
So, here we are in June, and the price for a gallon of regular gasoline is $4.00. Those of us who are actively looking for alternatives would really appreciate CR's quick review of the current Vectrix product that uses the NiMH batteries, and their advice towards whether to stand pat and wait for products using Li-ion batteries.
And, contrary to David's Jan. 9th post, I would readily buy an electric over a diesel, for the zero emissions, near zero noise, and improved maintenance aspects. I can justify that for a round-trip commute less than 50 miles.

I am looking for ratings on gas-powered scooters. Why doesn't Consumer Reports done this yet? What in the world are you waiting for? Is CR getting paid by the car producers to ignore alternate forms of transportation?
Posted by: louie | Jun 9, 2008 8:40:16 PM
I too am looking for a gas powered scooter. It is the main reason I added the on-line subscription to CR. Thinking I would find more info rapidly. I still look forward to CR taking a good look at a product which I believe will become invasive to local travel

Just want to echo the request for ratings for gas-powered scooters. There are so many name-brand and off-brand choices, and so many consumers looking at scooters as a responsible transportation choice. Thanks. Ann

I agree with the above comments CR needs to provide some ratings on alternative transportation. Vespa alone has seen a 41% increase in sales this quarter. WE WANT SCOOTER RATINGS!!!!

We have been watching the scooter-related comments with great interest. Rest assured, we have been looking closely at the demand for two-wheeled vehicle testing and coverage, and we will post a blog on the topic in the near future.

I agree with the above. Gas prices are going to continue to rise and alternative fuel and transportation is on everyone's mind. I would expect a company who prides themselves on staying on top of new technology to produce some reviews and guidance.

We are taking a thorough look at the scooter scenario and will comment in the near future.
I just started a free forum thread to help consolidate discussion on the scooter topic. We're interested in hearing your thoughts.

Ditto for more info on gas motor scooters. I was sure CR would have this info...

I, too, came here specifically for scooter comparisons and am stunned to find this info nonexistent. Glad the blog is there, but it currently has 2 intro posts on it only and is therefore of no use to me, as I intend to purchase a scooter in the next week or so. C'mon, CR!!

Kate,
Believe us, we understand and are looking VERY seriously at this. We will have a blog on the topic this coming week, and further out, we are evaluating how to report on scooters in the future.
For us, this is a tough issue. Consumer Reports is EXTREMELY safety focused, yet we see a demand for a product type that has inherent dangers. For a car to be recommended, it must meet stringent crash test and dynamic performance requirements. With that said, hopefully you can appreciate the challenges with addressing scooters, a product that any mishap could lead to injury.
If you are considering a scooter, do consider the safety risks before buying.

My husband and I, as a couple into their 50's age-wise, are considering a scooter as a second vehicle too. I too, was really surprised to find nothing on the subject. In early talks with vendors, interest is REALLY picking up. They are heavily used in Europe where a longer history with high gas prices has made them ubiquitous. Since safety is obviously a concern, a companion article about safety equipment and what a driving course should cover might be appropriate!

With the increased cost of gas, which has caused a surge in buying low cost to operate gas motor scooters. Can you PLEASE start rating the even more popular Motor Scooter????

Why are there no ratings for scooters or other gas saving modes of transportation available. Does anyone know of other publications that rate and compare these products?
Posted by: James | Jun 20, 2008 8:41:59 AM
Scooter / EV ratings, please.

As promised, we have posted a blog on motorcycles and scooters.

Do a search (Google, Dogpile, Yahoo). Look for scooter forums. Ask around there. That's what I did before I bought my gas-powered scooter.

Really need a rating on scooters. A format similar to that used for rating cars along with some road tests would be great as we move into the future.

I'd like to "ninety-ninth" the request for comprehensive REVIEWS on high-MPG scooters or motorcycles, INCLUDING high-quality electric models such as the Vectrix. We readers have a right to expect Consumer Reports to HOP on this subject more quickly than they have.
The Vectrix meets my range and performance needs for daily commute. If it is solidly engineered and reliable, I would purchase one.
To make a complete ZERO EMISSION, ZERO CARBON, OFF GRID solution I would install a half-dozen 200W PV panels, MPPT charge controller, half-dozen deep discharge batteries, and a DC-AC inverter to charge the Vectrix from solar power.
Hurry Up, CU.... time's a wastin' !!

Yup - I'd like to see some reviews of scooters too. I know you guys are working on it but I would be interested to know why you guys are behind the curve on this. It has been a growing need and interest for a very long time. All you have to do is get a hold of every scooter available, try them out and let us know the scoop. Should take you an afternoon. Just kidding. CR is great but this has been a long time coming.

Yes, please update all your wonderful and helpful info to include ratings on scooters. Thanks

Just wanted to pipe in, too. I also subscribed specifically for scooters. What a waste of six bucks! Guess I'll research elsewhere.
