Acura and Ford models earn IIHS Top Safety Pick award

Acura_mdx_blog The 2007 Acura MDX luxury SUV and the 2008 Ford Taurus and twin Mercury Sable large cars have earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) Top Safety Pick award. All Top Safety Pick vehicles must earn the highest rating of Good in front, side, and rear crash test protection. They must also be equipped with electronic stability control. ESC is standard on the MDX and optional on the Taurus and Sable. For 2007, the IIHS tightened the award criteria to include vehicles with available ESC. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently announced plans that require ESC to be phased in as standard equipment on all passenger vehicles by the 2012 model year.

Currently, there are 18 cars, SUVs, and minivans that have earned the Top Safety Pick designation. The Institute adds vehicles throughout the year as automakers introduce new models and improve safety features. (See Crash test 101 for more information on how the IIHS evaluates and tests vehicles).
